Kassin leads IM to road win at Negaunee
NEGAUNEE – Brayden Kassin scored 29 points, including 15 of his team’s 18 points in the second half, to propel Iron Mountain to a 42-36 victory over Negaunee in a West Pac Conference-East game Tuesday at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium.
“I’m proud of our win tonight in Negaunee,” IM coach Kyle Johnson said. “We started the game well by executing our offense. We scrapped a little better tonight and rebounded fairly well.”
Both squads began well offensively. Iron Mountain (6-5) tallied 16 points in the opening quarter on two 3-pointers and two free throws from Kassin and four points each from Charles Anderson and Charles Baldridge.
Meanwhile, Negaunee (4-6) scored 15, led by two 3-pointers from Wyatt Nelson and five points from Tristan Slater.
From there, the defenses took over and the offenses struggled. The Mountaineers took a 24-21 advantage into halftime and then outscored the Miners 8-4 in the third to lead 32-25 heading into the fourth.
“I was happy with our defensive effort …,” Johnson said.
In the fourth, Kassin nailed 8 of 10 free throws and IM held on for the win.
Up next for the Mountaineers is a home contest tonight against UPSSA Division 1-3 Westwood (12-0). In the first game between the teams, the Patriots defeated IM 55-34 on Jan. 2.
“We are still looking for improvement and looking forward to some challenging matchups ahead,” Johnson said.
