RON MOUNTAIN – On the strength of continued time drops and a handful of new U.P. Finals qualifying swims, Kingsford took down Gladstone Thursday afternoon at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center pool, with the girls team posting a 122-41 win and the boys nipping the Braves 77-72.

“The team had a good meet against Gladstone,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “We had a few new qualifications. At this point in their training, you usually don’t get a lot of time drops but we had a few tonight.”

The new U.P. qualifying swims were turned in by senior Marley Dixon, Iron Mountain sophomore Bryce Johnson, and Iron Mountain senior Elena Nelson.

Dixon qualified with a win and personal best in the 100 freestyle ((1:07.95) and a second place effort in the 200 free (2:30.52).

Johnson hit the mark in the 100 free and 200 IM. He finished second in the 200 IM behind teammate Thomas Gibbons 2:22.66 to 2:23.90, a personal best that saw him cut nearly 13 seconds from his time. His 100 time was also a personal best, clocking 57.61 as the first swimmer in the boys victorious 400 free relay. Gibbons, senior Quinten Smith and senior Sam Lamirand combined for a 3:58.03 in that race.

Kingsford senior Quinten Smith competes at the Splash N Dash in Marquette on Jan. 17. Smith helped the Flivvers to a win in the 400 freestyle relay against Gladstone Thursday at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center pool. He also finished second in both the 50 and 100 free, events in which he has already qualified for the U.P. Finals.

Jonson also led off and helped the 200 medley relay to a win in 1:54.10, joining Gibbons, senior David Arcand and Lamirand, and he once again set the pace in the 100 backstroke with a 22-second victory in 1:01.99.

Nelson’s qualifying swim was in the 200 free. She took third in 2:34.32.

Sophomore Allison Deuter took down the defending U.P. champion in the 100 butterfly in a super-tight finish. Deuter posted 1:06.95 to Gladstone’s Irene Neumeier who clocked 1:07.00. Deuter led early but finished third in that event at the finals last season.

Deuter also won the 50 free in 26.44, and she was part of two of the Flivvers’ winning relay teams, swimming third leg in the 200 medley which won in 2:06.16 and anchoring the 200 free relay to a 1:53.70 victory. Juniors Kailey Matuszewski and Ella McLean and sophomore Aubree Peterson were also part of the first-place showings on both relays.

Other winners for Kingsford included Lamirand in the 200 free (2:12.50) and 100 free (56.73), Matuszewski in the 200 IM (2:40.70) and 100 backstroke (1:13.82), Peterson in the 500 free with a personal best time of 6:10.32, McLean in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.55), and Gibbons in the boys breaststroke (1:13.80).

Norway junior Marissa Pipp snagged a personal best by clipping 14 seconds off her 500 free time (7:55.21), good for third. Junior Jocelyn Lindbeck set personal bests in the 100 and 200 free races. She placed fourth in the 200 with a time of 2:36.40 and followed that up with a second in the 100 with a time of 1:11.17.

Senior Chloe Blazer swam her fastest 50 free ever with a 31.87; junior Alexa Hearn set a personal best with a 1:29.59 in the 100 free; Norway junior Myah Gilroy was third in the 100 back with a personal best of 1:24.60; and freshman Cooper Meyers placed second in the boys 100 back with his best time ever at 1:24.14.

Dixon, Lindbeck, Blazer and senior Christina Fraker also turned in another win for Kingsford in the 400 free relay, taking the race in 4:53.40.

The Flivvers remain home early next week, hosting Marquette on Tuesday.

“That will be a real good test,” Lindstrom said. “There is always good close races when we swim them.”
