BARAGA – The Norway Knights suffered their first loss of the season Friday when they fell to host Baraga 35-32 in a contest between two of the top Division 4 teams in the Upper Peninsula.

Both teams struggled to get many players involved offensively. The UPSSA Division 4 third-ranked Vikings had just four scorers, while the D4 fourth-ranked Knights put only three players in the scoring column.

Norway senior Lauren Adams finished with 25 of her team’s 32 points. Paytan Carlson scored all five of her points in the first half, while Jenna Rossler hit a bucket in the third quarter for her two points.

“Offensively, we didn’t do enough,” Norway coach Brian Adams said. “They played zone, which I was thinking would play into our hands with the shooters we have. Unfortunately, we didn’t shoot very well.”

Mya Hendrickson topped the Vikings with 14 points and Kara Roberts added 12.

Baraga led 12-10 after the first quarter and 20-17 at halftime. The Knights pulled to within 28-27 after three but the Vikings held on.

“Pleased with the girls’ efforts on the road against one of the better Division 4 teams in the U.P.,” Coach Adams said. “If we play defense like this night in and night out, we will always give ourselves a chance to win games against really good teams.”

Norway, which got back on the winning track Tuesday with a 62-23 triumph over Stephenson, was scheduled to host Rapid River (3-5) on Wednesday night.

NORWAY – Adams 9 4-4 25, Rossler 1 0-0 2, Carlson 1 2-2 5. Totals: 11 6-6 32. 3-point field goals: 4 (Adams 3, Carlson).
