Iron Mountain 41

Ethan Marta scored 22 points in the first half and finished with 28 to lead the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Division 1-3 top-ranked Westwood Patriots to a 66-41 victory over visiting Iron Mountain on Thursday.

The Michigan Tech recruit logged 14 points of his team’s 16 points in the first quarter as the teams battled to a 16-all tie.

Marta then scored eight more in the second when the Patriots (13-0) broke the game open with a 22-6 burst to establish a 38-22 lead at the break.

IM coach Kyle Johnson was impressed with the Patriots as a whole, referring to Westwood’s appearance in the 2024-25 Division 3 state final four.

“Westwood is the No. 1 team in the U.P. for a reason,” he said. “They have a senior-heavy team with Breslin (Center) experience. We battled them for awhile, but their talent and experience took over.”

Brayden Kassin kept the Mountaineers (6-6) in stride with WW in the first quarter with 10 of his game-best 18 points. Charles Baldridge recorded the other six points and finished with 15 on the night.

“We scrapped with them much better this time around, which was nice to see,” Johnson said, referring to his team’s 55-34 defeat to the Patriots on Jan. 2 at Mountaineer Gym.

In building their long winning streak to begin the campaign, the Patriots have dominated all but two of their opponents – Westwood defeated Kingsford by five and Marquette by four.

Other than that, the Patriots have won 11 games by more than 20 points.

“Give Westwood credit, they are well coached,” Johnson said, “and Ethan Marta is the real deal.”
