Knights use 2nd-quarter run to spill Lady Trojans
CRYSTAL FALLS – The Norway Knights outscored the Forest Park Lady Trojans by 13 points in the second quarter and rode that run to a 53-47 victory between the two Skyline Central Conference rivals Monday at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium.
The Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Division 4 fourth-ranked Knights trailed 12-7 after one period but outscored the Trojans 22-9 to take a 29-21 lead into halftime.
Norway (8-1) added a point to its lead in the third quarter before Forest Park (7-4) outscored the Knights 12-9 in the fourth.
Norway’s Lauren Adams led all scorers with 29 points, connecting on 11 field goals, including three 3-pointers, and sinking 4 of 6 from the free throw line.
Jordyn Moln added eight points and Paytan Carlson chipped in with seven for the Knights.
Adams also topped her team in rebounds with 10.
The Williams sisters paced the Lady Trojans offensively. Elsie finished with 20 points and Audrey wound up with 18. The sisters drained six triples in the contest with sophomore Audrey sinking with four and senior Elsie recording two.

Kingsford 45
North Dickinson 24
Kingsford held host North Dickinson to eight field goals and left Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium with its fifth straight victory Monday.
“Defensively I thought we did what we needed to do to win the game,” KHS coach Mike Cross said. “Only giving up 24 points is really good. When our offense isn’t clicking, to be able to shut a team down defensively is really a good sign for us.”
The UPSSA Division 1-3 fifth-ranked Flivvers scuffled themselves offensively in the first half, recording only six points in the first quarter and nine in the second. But the Nordics never got revved up either and trailed 15-11 at the break.
“I thought defensively we played pretty good again tonight,” ND coach Kirk Mattson said afterward. “Keeping Kingsford to 15 points at half was about as good a defensive half as we have played.
“Offensively is a whole different ballgame. We missed way too many wide-open bunnies and layups again and our free throws aren’t getting any better.”
North Dickinson sank just 6 of 14 (42.9 percent) from the line, while Kingsford connected on 6 of 10.
Aubrie Moore and Avery Edwards helped open the game up from the outside in the third quarter for the Flivvers (7-2). Moore hit two of her three 3-pointers in the third, while Edwards buried one of her two as Kingsford extended its lead to 29-19 heading into the fourth.
“Aubrie was able to get going in the second half knocking down shots she was missing in the first half,” Cross said. “Avery Edwards played really well for us tonight. She hit a couple threes which is good for her confidence but helps spread a defense out as well. She can hit those and it’ll pay dividends for us going forward.
Cassie Olson scored four points in the fourth to go with three from Moore and Alyvia Kowalski to help the Flivvers outscore the Nordics 16-5 down the stretch.
“We struggled offensively in the first quarter, especially, but managed to get on track in the second quarter then scored 30 in the second half,” Cross added. “North Dickinson is a scrappy team with players that are coached to outhustle their opponents.”
During their current three-game losing streak, the Nordics are averaging only 31.7 points per game.
“We work so hard on getting good looks at the basket, but we don’t reward ourselves with some makes,” Mattson said. “We have to do a better job of finishing.”
Aunika Lindholm and Alyson Steinbrecher led the Nordics with five points each.
North Dickinson is scheduled to travel to Stephenson (1-6) on Thursday, while the Flivvers are scheduled to travel to Houghton to face the Gremlins (8-3).
