ND girls get 3rd straight win
HARRIS – The North Dickinson Nordics turned a two-point deficit after the first quarter into a 10-point lead at halftime and a 21-point advantage after three quarters in their 53-42 victory over host Bark River-Harris in a Skyline Central Conference contest Thursday.
The Nordics trailed 14-12 after the first quarter but outscored the Broncos 22-10 in the second and then 14-3 in the third.
During that decisive stretch, Alyson Steinbrecher scored 11 points, Aspen Anderson recorded seven and Ava Oman had six.
ND coach Kirk Mattson enjoyed what he saw from his team on both sides of the court.
“I thought we played our best game of the season” he said as his team won its third straight. “We played good defense and got after every loose ball and team rebounded very well.”
The Nordics held the Broncos (4-8) to only four field goals over the course of the second and third periods.
On the other hand, ND sank 15 field goals, including four 3-pointers in that stretch.
“Offensively we’re working on slowing down a little and not playing too fast,” Mattson said. “I think when we play defense the way we do it transitions into playing too fast on offense.”
Oman topped the Nordics with 15 points and Steinbrecher finished with 13.
Julie Nault paced BR-H with 11 points, while Emma Zawada contributed 10.
The Nordics travel to L’Anse on Tuesday. The Purple Hornets (10-2) carry an eight-game winning streak into their game at Ontonagon on Monday.

Menominee 61
West Iron 44
West Iron stumbled out of the gate Thursday at Menominee and never got a foothold in a nonconference loss to the Maroons.
West Iron (4-8) struggled against the Maroons’ full-court trapping defense and committed 16 turnovers in the first half, including several in the first quarter when they fell behind 25-12.
“Their press caused many bad decisions by our guards,” WIC coach Eric Shamion said. “They played with more physicality. We need to be ready for that and not give up 25 points in the first quarter.”
Ella Barker scored eight of her 15 points in the opening period and Lexi Marineau recorded seven of her 12 during that stretch to spark the UPSSA Division 1-3 fifth-ranked Maroons.
Behind nine points from Ryann Milostan, Menominee (11-4) extended its lead to 42-18 at halftime.
