ND girls top Broncos for 4th win in 5
FELCH TOWNSHIP — The North Dickinson girls basketball team stymied Bark River-Harris defensively for much of the game, while Aly Steinbrecher registered 20 points as the Nordics handled the Broncos 53-41 in a Skyline Central Conference tussle Monday at Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium.
Steinbrecher recorded seven of her points in the opening quarter to spur her team to a 12-3 edge. She then knocked down three buckets in the second quarter as the Nordics (4-3) built a 25-9 lead at the break.
“I thought we played very hard tonight, especially on the defensive side,” ND coach Kirk Mattson said. “Aly had 13 of those (20) points in the first half and that gave us a little separation.”
Mattson was also impressed by the play of Ava Oman, who posted seven points, nine steals, six assists and six rebounds.
“Ava had one heck of a game for us,” Mattson said.
Aspen Anderson also contributed offensively, finishing with 10 points.
Julia Nault led the Broncos (3-5) with 12 points while Emma Zawada added 10.
The remainder of the Broncos were held in check by ND, combining for just eight field goals.
On the other hand, the Nordics, who have won four of their last five games, sank 20 field goals, including five 3-pointers and hit 8 of 12 free throws.
“Overall, really good effort by the whole team,” Mattson said.

West Iron 51
ISHPEMING – There’s no secret when it comes to attempting to defeat the Ishpeming girls basketball team. Everyone knows that in order to stay with, let alone defeat the Hematites, a team must contend with two of the U.P.’s best players.
Monday night, West Iron County was unable to do that as Janessa Eagle poured in 28 points and Mya Hemmer knocked in 20 to lead Ishpeming over the Wykons.
Eagle came out firing, scoring 16 points in the first quarter to lead the UPSSA Division 4 second-ranked Hematites (7-1) to a 26-12 lead.
The 2024-25 all-U.P. Dream Teamer added six more in the second while Hemmer, a Division 1 volleyball recruit, showed she could do damage on the basketball court as well with 15 points in the first half as Ishpeming built a 46-16 at halftime.
“Tough matchup for us,” WIC coach Eric Shamion said. “Hemmer and Eagle are very skilled players, and we couldn’t stay with them.”
West Iron (2-4) picked up its offense in the second half, totaling 20 points in the third quarter and 15 more in the fourth.
Senior Lily De Sousa paced the Wykons with 16 points, 10 of which came in the third quarter. Junior Cami Alexa posted nine points in the fourth and finished with 12.
“I liked the hustle and aggressiveness from De Sousa and Alexa,” Shamion said.
