North Central girls soar past Wolves
SPALDING — The law of averages worked in Powers North Central’s favor in a 50-36 girls’ basketball triumph over Carney-Nadeau here Monday night.
Sophomore Addy Otradovec led the way with 20 points and 18 rebounds in this Skyline Central Conference match-up for the Jets, who defeated the Wolves for the first time in eight years.
“It definitely feels great to pull it off,” she said. “I think our experience helped tonight. We know they have a real young team, but we didn’t want to underestimate them. We knew they had shooters. I’ll give them credit. They definitely played hard.”
The Jets led 23-14 at halftime.
North Central freshman Autumn Triest started the third quarter with a 21-foot set shot from the right wing for a 26-14 cushion.
The Wolves scored the next five points, shaving their deficit to 26-19.
A lay-in by Triest pushed North Central’s advantage to 31-19 midway through the third.
Eighth-grader Jenah Ernest provided the Wolves with a bucket from 20 feet away as the Wolves trimmed their deficit to 31-22.
North Central answered with a 9-3 run for a 40-25 advantage going into the fourth frame.
Ernest drained a 22-foot set shot to bring the Wolves within 12 points to start the fourth.
The Jets, showing a noticeable height and size advantage, didn’t allow the Wolves to get any closer.
“We knew that coming in.” C-N coach Paul Polfus said. “In the first couple minutes, I thought we moved the ball well, but we had way too many unforced turnovers. We’re nearly 10 games into the season. We have to get through that. Their size advantage was a factor, athough we have to box out.”
A layup by Ernest gave the Wolves a 6-3 lead midway through the opening frame.
The Jets responded with 11 unanswered points, surging to a 14-6 lead on sophomore Jayden Laurin’s jump shot from the lane early in the second.
C-N was still within 17-12 following a 21-foot set shot by Ernest halfway through the second stanza.
Floaters from the boulevard by Otradovec and sophomore Natalie Willa, however, gave the Jets a 21-12 cushion late in the second.
“Addy played aggressively,” Granquist said. “She’s definitely emerging as a leader on this team. We had pretty equal scoring among the other girls. This is great for confidence. This is something we can build on. This is still a little bit of a learning curve, although that’s coming along pretty well.”
Willa and eighth-grader Myla Gorzinski added nine points apiece and Triest finished with eight for the Jets, who committed 15 turnovers.
The Wolves, who had 19 miscues, were led by Ernest’s 21 points.
“Jenah played real well,” Polfus said. “Tonight, she was aggressive and looked for steals.”
North Central (3-6 overall, 1-2 league) hosts Superior Central tonight. The Wolves (4-5 overall, 1-2 league), host Norway tonight.
