Steinbrecher sparks Nordics past NC

POWERS — Aly Steinbrecher scored 17 of her game-high 19 points in the first half to spark the North Dickinson Nordics to a 64-24 triumph over North Central in a Skyline Central Conference game Friday in Powers.

Steinbrecher hit two 3-point field goals and two shots from inside the arc in the first quarter to lead the Nordics (3-2) to a 14-4 lead after one quarter.

She then tacked on two buckets and another 3-pointer as ND built a 32-16 advantage by halftime.

Steinbrecher also grabbed eight rebounds and notched eight steals to finish just short of a triple-double.

“I thought Aly Steinbrecher was outstanding tonight,” ND coach Kirk Mattson said. “She was definitely taking a leadership role on the floor.”

North Dickinson blew the game open in the third quarter by outscoring the Jets 20-3.

Mattson said he was concerned about how his team would play since his squad hadn’t faced an opponent in 2½ weeks. But the Nordics didn’t show much rust in Friday’s victory.

“I thought that our overall team effort was very good,” Mattson said. “I thought we moved the ball offensively and played good, unselfish basketball.”

Key to their performance was a steadier handle on the basketball.

“We have struggled with turnovers in our first four games, so that has been a focus for us over the long break,” Mattson said. “We ended up with only 12 turnovers for the game and zero in the second half, so I was pleased with that for sure.”

Joining Steinbrecher in double figures were Ava Oman with 13 and Raina Ledzian with 11. Aunika Lindholm chipped in with nine.

Autumn Triest led NC (1-3) with 15 points, which included two triples.

The Jets were scheduled to host Big Bay de Noc today while the Nordics shoot for their fourth victory in a row Tuesday when they entertain Niagara (5-4).

“(That) will be a big challenge for us,” Mattson said.
