Team effort credited in Norway scoring record

IRON MOUNTAIN – Senior guard Lauren Adams broke the Norway High School scoring record during her 24-point performance Tuesday when the Knights defeated Iron Mountain 49-27 at Mountaineer Gym.

Adams eclipsed the former record of Norway star and current Knights’ junior varsity coach Jordan Kraemer, which stood at 1,378.

“From a coaching standpoint, Tuesday was first about our team,” said Norway coach and Lauren’s father Brian Adams on Thursday. “We beat a scrappy Iron Mountain team because we defended, shared the ball and played together.

“Lauren’s record is special but it only happens inside a program and with teammates like the ones in our locker room now and in her previous years.”

The Knights, playing only their third game of the season, shot out to an 18-7 lead after one quarter, led by nine points from Adams.

The 2024-25 all U.P. Dream Teamer then buried three 3-pointers in the second quarter to spark the Knights (3-0) on a 20-3 run that put them up 38-10 at the break.

Paytan Carlson sank a triple and two shots from inside the arc in the third quarter as Norway pushed its lead to 47-12.

In the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers (1-8) received seven points, including a 3-pointer, from Alysia Wood and six points from Olivia Geneva to account for their final total.

But the talk afterwards was about Lauren Adams, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh recruit who has put her name at the top of the annuals of Norway basketball.

“When she was younger, she set some big goals for herself – play in big games, win championships, break the school scoring record, play in college,” Brian Adams said. “Tuesday night she checked that last box. I’m proud of the points, but I’m even more proud of how she just didn’t just talk about goals, she did the work to achieve them.

“She’s a great player, but she’s an incredible person and daughter first. The record is a reflection of a lot of hard work from her, family, teammates and coaches from elementary, middle school and AAU.”

The Knights were slated to host North Central (2-3) on Thursday, while the Mountaineers are off until Monday when they travel to Westwood (1-5).
