Trojans topple Flivvers behind Giuliani’s 31

CRYSTAL FALLS – One of the highlights in recent seasons of the local boys basketball schedule has been the matchup between the Kingsford Flivvers and the Forest Park Trojans.

Both teams have been flying high over the past few years, including last year when both squads advanced to the Breslin Center for state semifinals competition.

So when the teams met on Monday at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium, the chance of a memorable game was high. And that’s how the contest turned out with the Trojans eking by the Flivvers 69-68.

The game saw the return of 2024-25 all-U.P. Dream Team selection Vic Giuliani to the FP lineup after an injury, and the lanky junior didn’t disappoint, ringing up 31 points in the Trojans’ victory.

He also added nine rebounds and three steals.

Both teams started well offensively, with the Trojans (6-2) holding a 20-18 edge after one period. FP lengthened the advantage to 42-34 at halftime, but the Flivvers (5-3) pulled to within one at 55-54 heading into the fourth.

Both teams recorded 14 points in the final stanza to account for the final score.

Lyle Price joined Giuliani in double figures with 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers along the way. Izaiah Tarter contributed six points, four assists and four steals for the victors.

Owen Olkkonen topped the Flivvers with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jett Buckley finished with 16 points and Gage Sorenson contributed 10.

The game was largely won at the 3-point arc as the Trojans sank eight of 21, while the Flivvers managed just one make in 14 attempts.

The Flivvers head back into Great Northern Conference action Friday when they host Gladstone (6-2).

The Trojans host West Iron County (1-6) on Thursday.
