Wykons edge Gwinn for 2nd straight win

IRON RIVER – Junior Cami Alexa sank three 3-pointers and scored a team-high 13 points to lift the West Iron County Wykons to a 38-34 victory over Gwinn on Thursday evening at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

Bristol Shamion added eight points and Lily De Sousa chipped in with six for WIC , which won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

“These kids have smiles on their faces and we needed it for moral,” WIC coach Eric Shamion said of his team which had dropped five consecutive games prior to the victories over Escanaba and Gwinn. “And I’m just glad that we were able to get this victory tonight. They played hard and Gwinn played hard too, but I’m glad that we made the plays down the stretch to get this win.”

After trailing 17-12 late in the second quarter, West Iron (4-6) scored the last five points of the half on a driving hoop by Alexa off a pass from Lacey Shamion and then a 3-pointer from Alexa.

“She is a mighty mouse out there,” Shamion said of Alexa, who despite her diminutive stature is often among WIC’s leading rebounders. “She’s small but she never stops.”

Alexa hit a triple to start the second half and later sank another driving bucket off another assist from Lacey Shamion to help the Wykons carry a 28-25 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

Gwinn junior Makayla Delmont, who led her team with 15 points, began the third quarter with a layup and later added another lay-in off an offensive rebound as the Modeltowners (4-5) pulled into a 31-all tie with 3:40 to play.

But just as in their victory over Escanaba on Wednesday, the Wykons made the winning plays in the game’s final minutes. Bristol Shamion knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:05 left to put the Wykons back in front for good.

De Sousa followed with two free throws with 2:27 remaining and then Bristol Shamion iced the game with two free throws with 38.3 second left.

Both teams played aggressive halfcourt man-to-man defense throughout. The Modeltowners finished with 17 turnovers, while the Wykons recorded just five.

“They’re starting to learn the pace of the game,” Coach Shamion said, “and maybe that’s a little credit to Bristol. She’s starting to learn how to play the point guard position better. But I think all the kids are understanding situational basketball. And at the varsity level you have to learn that.”

Next up for the Wykons is a home matchup with Kingsford (7-2) on Monday.
