Flivvers defeat GNC foe
Kingsford improved to 5-1 in the Great Northern Conference with a 48-31 girls basketball win at Menominee on Wednesday.
The Flivvers held the Maroons to single-digit scoring in all but the third quarter and netted 10 unanswered points to open the game.
“Getting off to the start that we did wasn’t what we had in the cards,” Menominee coach Lucas Chouinard told the Marinette EagleHerald. “Kingsford was very patient offensively. They were able to get to their spots early on and get the shots that they wanted. Our girls defended Kingsford’s actions really well, but credit them for sticking with their game plan and executing in that first quarter to build a lead.”
Kingsford held a 25-9 advantage at halftime. The Maroons outscored the Flivvers 16-14 in the third and pulled within 12 points in the fourth but drew no closer.
Kingsford’s Aubrey Moore, Avery Edwards and Cassie Olson combined to go 5-6 on free throws to help seal the win.
Moore was Kingsford’s leading scorer with 15 points and Alyvia Kowalski chipped in 13. Olson added nine and Edwards scored five. Madalyn Sleik and Jazzlyne Shaughnessy each contributed three points.
Menominee’s Lexi Marineau led all scorers with 17 points. The Maroons fell to 3-4 in the conference.
Kingsford will host GNC leader Gladstone (7-0) on Monday.
