Gladstone wrapped up the Great Northern Conference girls basketball crown with a 42-35 win Monday at Kingsford.

The Braves (16-3, 8-0) took a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter. Kingsford (14-3, 5-2) pulled to within four with 2-plus minutes remaining, but got no closer.

Entering the game, Gladstone was ranked No. 2 in the UPSSA Division 1-3 poll, while the Flivvers were ranked No. 3.

“We struggled to get much going in the first half but picked it up a bit offensively in the second half,” said Kingsford coach Mike Cross.

Alyvia Kowalski led the Flivvers with 10 points, including seven in the second half. Cassie Olson added nine points and Aubrie Moore scored eight.

“It was Senior Night and it’s unfortunate they weren’t able to enjoy a win, but those girls have been crucial to our success this year,” Cross said. “Adelyn (Normand), Cass and Jazz (Shaughnessy) add such a great vibe to our team. They played well tonight.”

Avery Edwards contributed five points and Shaughnessy netted three to round out Kingsford’s scoring.

“Defensively, Gladstone is so good,” Cross said. “I thought we were pretty good defensively as well … they managed to hit a few more shots than we did. We’ve got nothing to hang our heads about, though.”

Kingsford travels to Houghton on Thursday.

Gladstone will host Iron Mountain on Thursday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
