IM shuts down Miners, Knights tame Cougars
IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain held the Negaunee to just 10 field goals on their way to a 46-28 victory Tuesday at Mountaineer Gym.
After Negaunee scored 10 points in the opening quarter, the Mountaineers (11-9) locked the Miners down for just four points in the second period and seven in both the third and fourth quarters.
“Our defensive effort was outstanding,” said IM coach Kyle Johnson. “All four quarters. To hold a team to 28 points in a varsity basketball game is not easy.
“My guys played with tremendous effort and heart. Lots of diving on the floor and getting loose balls.”
The IM offense did more than enough to win the game. The Mountaineers came out strong with 18 points in the first frame and then recorded eight points in the second quarter to take a 26-14 advantage into halftime.
The Mountaineers, who’ve won three of their last four games, extended their lead to 37-21 heading into the fourth quarter. IM outscored Negaunee 9-7 in the fourth.
Brayden Kassin led the Mountaineers with 21 points, while Charles Baldridge posted 10.
Brayden Gleason topped the Miners (11-9) with seven points.
Iron Mountain is slated to close its regular season slate with a game at Three Lakes (12-7) tonight. Iron Mountain has a bye in the first round of the MHSAA Division 3 District 66 and will host the winner of the Gwinn vs. Bark River-Harris game on Wednesday.
“Hopefully we can carry the momentum into the tournament,” Johnson said.
