GWINN – Iron Mountain junior Brayden Kassin scored 28 points in the first half and finished with 41 to lead the Mountaineers past host Gwinn 84-55 on Friday.
Surprisingly, the winless Modeltowners (0-16) held an 18-17 lead after the first quarter, scoring more points in that frame than they did in the entire game in the previous matchup in Iron Mountain on Jan. 28 when the Mountaineers stifled Gwinn 62-15.
But the Modeltowners’ upset bid dissipated quickly in the second quarter when Kassin exploded for 17 points to spark the Mountaineers to a 45-29 lead at halftime.
Iron Mountain (9-8) pushed its lead to 63-44 after three quarters and outscored Gwinn 21-11 in the fourth.
Charles Baldridge also had a big offensive game for IM with 22 points, 14 of which came in the second half.
The Mountaineers will seek revenge against rival Kingsford on Tuesday in Kingsford. The UPSSA Division 1-4 fourth-ranked Flivvers defeated Iron Mountain 41-26 in the first meeting on Jan. 13, a win that sparked their current seven-game winning streak.
