KHS girls lock down Sentinels
Kingsford improved to 5-1 in the Great Northern Conference with a 41-28 home win over Marquette on Friday.
The Sentinels (1-5, 4-10) were limited to four points in the fourth quarter as the Flivvers held on after leading 25-9 at halftime.
“We played really well both offensively and defensively in the first half,” said Kingsford coach Mike Cross. “We struggled to contain (Avery) Osborne in the third quarter. Still, we were able to buckle down in the fourth.”
Aubrie Moore led Kingsford with 14 points. Alyvia Kowalski added 10 points, including eight in the first half. Cassie Olson contributed nine points and 19 rebounds.
Marquette’s Osborne scored six in the third quarter as the Sentinels closed Kingsford’s lead to 32-24.
“We know anytime you play Marquette you’ll have your hands full,” Cross said, crediting a consistent defense for what is now a 10-game winning streak.
“These girls have bought into winning on that side of the court,” he said. “Alyvia Kowalski carries this team on her back at times. She had a great first half. Her defense, though, never lets us down. Her and Avery Edwards really play hard on the defensive side of the ball.”
The Flivvers, 12-2 overall, have a conference game at Menominee (4-3, 12-5) tonight and play at iron Mountain on Thursday. Gladstone stands atop the GNC at 6-0 and will play at Kingsford on Monday, Feb. 16.
