HOUGHTON – Kingsford’s special teams was anything but Tuesday night as the Flivvers surrendered two short-handed goals and struggled to find any footing offensively, falling to Division 3 No. 10 Jeffers 6-0 at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena on the campus of Michigan Tech.
“We weren’t good in any period,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “Our power play was brutal again. We just didn’t do what we’re supposed to do, and we didn’t do what we practiced.”
The Jets (14-5-1) got two goals from junior Tage Rajala. He scored early in the contest to give the hosts all they would end up needing, but it wasn’t until the third period that the game slipped away from the Flivvers. A 2-0 contest heading into the third, Jeffers tagged Kingsford for four goals in the final stanza with Rajala providing the bookend with a shortie for the final score.
The Flivvers (9-12-0) only put 12 shots on goal the entire game, getting blanked for the fifth time this season. Jeffers fired 35 shots on senior goalie Nate Scullon, who saw his record slip to 6-5-0.
Max Nordstrom, Bryce Maki, Cameron Anderson and Brogan Turner all added goals for the Jets, who completed a season sweep of the Flivvers after already posting a 5-1 victory on Dec. 2 at Mountain View Ice Arena.
The Flivvers return home tonight for Senior Night, hosting Rhinelander who they defeated 6-1 back on Dec. 31. The final regular season home game follows on Tuesday against Manistique, another team the Flivvers handled earlier in the season. The last regular season game sees the Flivvers heading to Calumet on Feb. 12. A regional playoff contest will follow with the matchup and location yet to be determined.
