IRON MOUNTAIN – In the final regular season meet and senior night, Kingsford’s swim team added two more U.P Finals qualifying times and set 14 personal bests in a split with Gladstone Tuesday at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center pool.

Kingsford girls won 106-52, while the boys fell 83-58.

“We honored nine seniors and one exchange student tonight,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “It was an emotional night for the team. It wasn’t our best night on the boys side with some critical mistakes that we cannot make at finals.”

Freshman Michael Covitz and senior Marley Dixon provided the new U.P. times for the Flivvers. Covitz continued improving his 500 free, winning the event in 6:50.05 for a new personal best. He also set a personal best in the 50 free (29.08). Dixon qualified in the 100 backstroke, taking third in 1:19.71, her best time of the season.

Individual winners for Kingsford also included sophomore Allison Deuter (2:27.90) and junior Thomas Gibbons (2:18.70) in the 200 IM.

Freshman Michael Covitz, seen here in a meet against Marquette earlier in the season, qualified for the U.P. Finals in the 500 freestyle in Tuesday’s meet against Gladstone.

Deuter also swam the 100 fly, taking second to Irene Neumeier 1:06.40-1:07.85 in what could be a preview of a U.P. Finals matchup. Deuter edged Neumeier last time they went head to head in the event, 1:06.95 to 1:07.00. The two swimmers, along with Marquette’s Kaytlin Roell are all separated by a second for the fastest U.P. high school times in the event this season. Neumeier’s time Tuesday moved her into first among the trio for the season.

Sophomore Aubree Peterson (28.47) and senior Quinten Smith (25.04) were first in the 50 free, with Peterson also claiming the 100 free with a season best 1:04.68. Senior David Arcand won the 100 butterfly in 1:07.67. Junior Jocelyn Lindbeck took the 500 free in 7:06.63, and junior Ella McLean remained unbeaten in the 100 breaststroke, posting a season best 1:17.37.

Iron Mountain sophomore Bryce Johnson added a personal best with his second-place swim in the 200 IM in 2:23.09. Norway junior Marissa Pipp was third in the 100 fly with a personal best time of 1:32.04. Senior Chloe Blazer (1:13.22), Norway junior Jade Welcenbach (1:16.81), freshman Cooper Meyers (1:06.29), and senior Lyam Schooler (1:13.69) all posted personal bests in the 100 free. Meyers also set a personal best with his second in the 100 back (1:21.32). Junior Olvia Sage added a personal best with a second in the 100 back (1:15.92).

Relay wins for the Flivvers included the girls 200 medley and 400 free, both races swam by junior Kailey Matuszewski, McLean, Deuter and Peterson. Peterson anchored the 200 medley which saw Kingsford go 2:07.80. Deuter and Peterson flipped legs in the 400 and the team posted a 4:23.12.

The junior varsity U.P. Finals take place Feb. 13 with Kingsford hoping to qualify a few more swimmers for the varsity finals slated for Feb. 21. Both meets are held in Marquette.
