Lady Trojans start fast, end strong to beat ND
CRYSTAL FALLS – The Forest Park Lady Trojans scored 17 points in the first quarter and 15 in the fourth Thursday night as they defeated North Dickinson 44-29 in a Skyline Central Conference contest at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium.
Audrey Williams and Aubrey Waara-Shamion scored five points each while Tessa Bartoszek added two buckets in the opening eight minutes as FP grabbed a 17-12 lead.
Then, with the Nordics hanging around, down 29-22 heading into the fourth, the Lady Trojans (11-6) put together a 15-7 run to account for their 15-point win.
“Forest Park came out shooting lights out in the first quarter,” ND coach Kirk Mattson said. “They hit three 3s and a few long 2s and had us on our heels.”
Thanks to four points each from Alyson Steinbrecher and Aspen Anderson, the Nordics were able to absorb Forest Park’s early blow, but then the Nordics went ice-cold in the second frame, going scoreless to trail 24-12 at halftime.
“We switched to a zone and slowed them up and only gave up seven points in the second quarter, but our offensive struggles continued and it really caught up to us tonight,” Mattson said.
“We get great looks, but we are struggling shooting this year.”
The Nordics connected on just 24% from the floor and shot 1 of 18 from beyond the 3-point arc.
On the other side, the Lady Trojans sank six triples in the contest and recorded 18 made field goals to just 10 for the Nordics.
Audrey Wiliams, Elsie Williams and Bartoszek all scored 12 points to pace Forest Park, while Steinbrecher totaled nine and Ava Oman recorded eight to lead North Dickinson.
Forest Park traveled to UPSSA Division 4 No. 5 Norway (14-3) Friday in a possible preview of a district final matchup. The Knights knocked off the Lady Trojans 53-47 in the teams’ first meeting of the year Jan. 19 in Crystal Falls.
The Nordics are off until Tuesday when they host Rapid River (5-11).
