IRON MOUNTAIN – The Iron Mountain boys basketball team jumped on the top team in the Upper Peninsula on Monday before the visiting Menominee Maroons recovered to eventually post a 48-39 victory over the Mountaineers.
Iron Mountain (8-8) grabbed a 14-6 lead after one quarter on the strength of a bucket and six free throws from Brayden Kassin, a 3-pointer from Lane Wender, a hoop from Charles Baldridge and a free throw from Quinton Doty.
The UPSSA Division 1-3 No. 1 Maroons (14-2) sliced five points off their deficit in the second and trailed 20-17 at intermission.
Menominee snatched the lead in the third by outscoring IM 13-7 to go into the fourth quarter up 30-27 and then closed with an 18-12 total for their nine-point win.
“I was proud of my guys with how hard they played,” IM coach Kyle Johnson said. “They didn’t back down and battled for four quarters.

Iron Mountain's Brayden Kassin (12) powers his way to the basket for a score as Talan Woods (4) tries to cut him off Monday.
“Menominee has so many athletes and good basketball players that are well coached. They wore us out late in the game and we just didn’t have enough offensively.”
Kassin finished with 24 points for 61.5 percent of his team’s output. Wender added nine, while Doty and Baldridge recorded three points each.
Talan Woods led a well-balanced offensive attack for Menominee with 14 points, while Jacob Schultz and Tanner Theuerkauf contributed 11 points each.
Menominee sank eight 3-pointers in the game while IM finished with four.
While impressed with the Maroons, Johnson hopes for a rematch in a few weeks.
“Hopefully we see them in the districts,” he said.
