The Northern Lights YMCA Swim Team showed continued development at the Howard Suamico Storm Breakers winter meet, with swimmers across all age groups posting steady performances and meaningful time improvements as the season progresses.
The girls 9-10 age group featured several Northern Lights swimmers gaining valuable meet experience. Catherine Majors competed in the 100-yard individual medley, finishing in 1:46.95.
“Majors is consistently improving,” head coach Aimee Tatangelo stated. “She works hard at practice and pushes herself at every competition.”
Felicity DeGroot posted a time of 54.03 in the 50-yard freestyle, while Anastasia DeGroot finished the same event in 1:01.76. Both swimmers demonstrated continued progress in sprint events. Annika Gustafson added a strong swim in the 100-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 1:35.43, while Miriam Gustafson followed closely behind in 1:43.04.
Northern Lights swimmers also competed in the 8-and-under division. Alexzandra Beurjey recorded a time of 29.61 in the 25-yard freestyle, while Ayla Harrand and Alivia Bunker each posted improved efforts in backstroke and freestyle events, gaining experience in a competitive meet environment.
In the girls 11-12 division, Sierra Tatangelo competed in the 100-yard individual medley, finishing in 1:26.54 and continuing to show balanced improvement across all four strokes. Teammate Ella Murphy added solid swims in her individual events, recording season-best performances and demonstrating increased confidence in her race execution.
In the older age groups, Allison Deuter had strong races across the board including the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.98, marking another improvement from earlier NLY meets.
“Allison is an impressive swimmer to watch in and out of the pool. She is a great role model for our younger swimmers,” coach Tatangelo said.
Aubrey Dixon had one of her best meets of the season with big time drops in the Individual medley, showing improvement in all four strokes.
On the boys’ side, Dominic Tatangelo recorded solid swims across his events, showing improvement in both pacing and race strategy. His performances reflected continued growth and increased comfort racing with tough competition.
George Fornetti competed in multiple events, focusing on strong finishes and improved technique. Jonas Eloranta improved on every event he swam with strong finishes.
Tatangelo said the meet was a positive step forward for the team. “We’re seeing progress from swimmers at every level,” she said. “Time drops, better race execution, and confidence are starting to show, and that’s exactly what we want to see at this point in the season.”
Tatangelo also emphasized the importance of development over results. “Not every success shows up as a medal,” she said. “The improvement, effort, and support these swimmers give each other is what continues to move our program forward.”
