Wykons dominate Bessemer for sixth win

IRON RIVER – The West Iron County Wykons embarked on a 30-0 run bridging the first and second quarters and recorded their sixth win of the season Tuesday, a 64-11 rout of Bessemer at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

“This was a night where all the kids got to score,” WIC coach Eric Shamion said. “I thought they had fun playing the game of basketball and in the grand scheme of things that’s important, too.”

The Wykons (6-11) started slowly, scoring just six points in the opening three minutes but they got things revved up with a 1-2-2 three-quarters court trapping defense.

The Speedgirls, whose roster is comprised of two eighth-graders, five freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors and three seniors, committed 15 turnovers in the first quarter as the Wykons went on a 16-0 run to take a 22-2 stranglehold on the game after eight minutes.

Bessemer (1-17) did not score in the second quarter until the 1:43 mark when junior Sarah Hoffenberg sank a 3-pointer. But by that point, the Wykons led by 32 points and closed the half with a 36-5 advantage.

Shamion pulled off the pressure defense for the final three minutes of the first half and did not employ the tactic in the second half.

The Wykons outscored the Speedgirls 15-6 in third quarter and 13-0 in the fourth during a running clock.

WIC senior Lily De Sousa led all scorers with 21 points. She had plenty of help from Cami Alexa (12 points), Bristol Shamion (11 and Eriana Sucholl (11 points).

Freshman Neveah Aufdencamp topped Bessemer with six.

The Wykons head to Calumet tonight to take on the Copper Kings (4-10) in a West Pac Conference contest.
