Fast start propels Knights into regional

Norway (19-4) will face Ishpeming (20-3) in an MHSAA Division 4 girls basketball regional semifinal at 6 p.m. today at Kingsford. Lauren Adams scored 26 points — including 19 in the first half — as Norway defeated North Dickinson 46-25 on Friday to claim an MHSAA Division 4 district title.

The Knights will face Ishpeming tonight at Kingsford in a regional semifinal.

Norway led 31-17 at halftime Friday.

North Dickinson coach Kirk Mattson said cold shooting prevented a better start. “We seemed a light tight,” he said. I think that combined with Norway hitting shots early in the first quarter put us on our heels and we never really recovered.”

Lauren Adams, he said, “showed why she was our conference Player of the Year.”

Knights coach Brian Adams described the victory as “a great team win,” adding “every girl on this team helped win this championship with the way they practiced and prepared each other.” The coach said he was pleased with Norway’s defense, but the offense was at times sloppy.

“Our defense has really stepped up over the last two games,” he said. “We need to do a better job of controlling our turnovers — 19 is too many if we want to make noise in the regional.”

The Nordics were without All-U.P. special mention player Lauren Jungwirth throughout the season.

“Overall, I am extremely proud of our team and how we all had to adapt to playing different roles,” said Mattson. “I saw a lot of improvement from where we were at the start of the season. Our lone senior, Raina Ledzian, will be missed, especially her defense. We have a couple of juniors and a handful of sophomores coming back and look forward to more experience and confidence the next few years.”

Khloe Roberts led the Nordics with 11 points against the Knights.
