LadyCats earn top conference awards

Florence landed three players on the Northern Lakes Conference girls basketball first team and swept honors for offensive and defensive player of the year.

LadyCats junior Cecelia Mills was a unanimous pick for the first team and was named Offensive Player of the Year.

Kelsi Chrisman, a Florence sophomore, was Defensive Player of the Year while also being named to the all-conference first team. Fellow sophomore Miley VanDenHeuvel was a first team pick as well.

Two LadyCats received second team all-conference honors — senior Ashley Peterson and junior Naomi Millan.

Mills led Florence in scoring, averaging 16.3 points per game, while Chrisman averaged 10.4 points and VanDenHeuvel averaged 10.3.

Chrisman averaged 6.9 steals per game, which ranked third in the state. VanDenHeuvel averaged 11.8 rebounds per game, which was tied for eighth in Division 5.

Florence finished 22-5 overall. The LadyCats, coached by Stan Millan, advanced to the WIAA Division 5 sectional final and fell to Stevens Point Pacelli. The Cardinals went on the win the state championship.

Wabeno-Laona won the Northern Lakes title with a 7-1 record while Florence finished tied for second with Three Lakes-Phelps at 5-3. In the postseason, however, the LadyCats defeated Wabeno-Laona for the WIAA regional crown.

Wabeno-Laona saw two players named to the Northern Lakes first team — senior Lovey VanZile and junior Brynn Yaeger. They were joined by Crandon junior Malia Stamper and Three Lakes-Phelps senior Paige Brafford.

In addition to Peterson and Millan, second team selections were Crandon junior Briley Erdmann, Wabeno-Laona senior Lily Terry, Three Lakes-Phelps senior Kailyn Fogerty and Three Lakes-Phelps sophomore Malia Szews.
