Pirates take 1st at D4 cheer finals
MOUNT PLEASANT — High school cheer teams, including Norway, battled Friday in the Division 4 Michigan High School Athletic Association Competitive Cheer State Finals at Central Michigan University.
Each team showcased its skills in three rounds.
The Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates won first place with a final score of 776.34, nearly 22 points better than runner-up and 2025 champion Hanover-Horton (754.36). Sanford Meridian placed third. Hudson, which has won six of the last 10 Division 4 titles, took fourth.
The Norway Knights, the only Upper Peninsula school represented in the eight-team field, won seventh place with a final score of 713.34.
The Knights placed second in a regional competition Feb. 28 in Hudsonville to earn a trip to the state finals. Norway was MHSAA district champion for a third straight year.
