KHS softball falls to Peshtigo

PESHTIGO, Wis. – Kingsford’s varsity softball team, led by new head coach Amy Brunswick, opened the season with a 10-3 setback at Peshtigo Thursday afternoon.

Senior Grace Rice smashed a solo home run in the third inning and junior Kailey Matuszewski also drove in a run for the Flivvers, but too many miscues in the field helped the Bulldogs to their comfortable margin.

“It was our first time on the field, and we saw some good things from the team as a whole,” Brunswick said. “We struggled at the plate and need to continue to work hard and minimize our errors.”

Junior Mya Brunswick took the circle for the Flivvers, going six innings with eight strikeouts and one walk. She allowed eight hits was charged with five earned runs.

“Overall we’re a pretty young team,” Brunswick said. “We’re going to move on from tonight, continue to work hard and improve.”

Kingsford starts the season with a roster of 12 players consisting of seniors Rice, Adelyn Normand, Jazzlyne Shaughnessy and Karly Trevillian; juniors Brunswick, Matuszewski, Alexandria Gauthier, Kelsey Strauss and Lychele DeGroot; and sophomores Allison Deuter, Jolie Fleming and Kyra Clement. Coach Brunswick is assisted by Jeff McLean and Brad Strehlow.

Kingsford’s junior varsity squad, led by head coach John Bray, earned a 5-4 comeback win. Freshman Hannah Deuter belted a two-run triple to tie the game 3-3 and scored the go-ahead tally on a hit by freshman Gracie Chartier. Freshman Miley Bray later scored on a wild pitch.
