KINGSFORD – Two big innings powered Kingsford to a 13-3 five-inning rout over Calumet in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Lodal Park, but the Copper Kings turned the tables in the second game by an identical score in another five-inning contest.

“We’re struggling to put all together consistently,” Flivvers head coach Amy Brunswick said of her team’s second straight doubleheader split. “Errors are killing us, and that’s hard to recover from. We need to overcome it. It’s early in the season yet, so we will keep working to minimize our mistakes.”

Kingsford put the first game out of reach early, scoring seven times in the second inning. Calumet answered with a three-run fourth, but Kingsford added six more in the bottom half of the fourth to put the game away for good.

Sophomore Jolie Fleming was one of five Flivvers with two hits in the game. She ripped a two-run double through the left side in the second inning and added another run-scoring double with a long fly to left in the fourth.

Senior Karly Trevillian hit a RBI single in the second and clobbered a double to the fence in right that scored another run in the fifth. Sophomore Kyra Clement, senior Jazzlyne Shaughnessy and senior Adelyn Normand each tallied two hits, Shaughnessy collecting two RBIs with a shot up the middle in the fifth.

“We had a great second inning and continued to be aggressive on the base paths which was nice to see,” Brunswick said.

Junior Mya Brunswick improved to 4-1 on the season, allowing six hits, one earned run and just one walk while striking out eight as Calumet batters struggled to catch up to her heater.

Seven errors doomed Kingsford’s chances in the second game, along with producing only two hits.

The game was tied 3-3 after two innings, but the floodgates opened for Calumet after that. The Copper Kings scored four in the third and three more in each the fourth and fifth innings, on just eight total hits.

Trevillian took the loss in the circle, throwing four innings and allowing all eight hits. Sophomore Lychele DeGroot also pitched an inning.

“Our pitchers and catchers are doing great,” Brunswick said. “We just need to support them.”

In JV action Tuesday, the Flivvers remained unbeaten with 16-6 and 15-5 victories over Calumet. Sophomores Olivia Scott and Alaysa Bacon smacked triples in the first game, with freshman Alayna Pietrantonio, Miley Bray and Hannah Deuter all adding doubles. Freshman Gracie Chartier grabbed the win in game one. She allowed 12 hits but fanned four and walked only one. Full stats were unavailable for the second game, but after trailing early, Deuter put the Flivvers in front to stay with a long fly to right that rolled up to the fence for an inside-the-park grand slam.

A busy week of home softball wraps up this afternoon with a scheduled doubleheader against Marquette.
