Knights take 2 from Badgers

Norway swept a softball doubleheader at Niagara on Monday, winning the opener 19-2 and the second game 13-6. Both games went five innings.

The Knights pounded 19 hits in the first game. Addyson Burklund, with a double and triple, and Payton Paquette, a double, set the pace at four hits each.

Paquette drove in four runs while Devynn Ross and Kendall Burklund had three RBIs each. Lilly Tomlanovich had three hits, including a triple.

Grace Payette lashed two hits for the Badgers, including a triple, and Paige Guardiola collected two singles.

Kendall Burklund pitched four innings for Norway, fanning six, to take the win. Lila Moraska finished with a shutout inning and two strikeouts.

“The first game was a tough game for us defensively,” said Niagara coach Emily Payette. “Norway was able to place some hits just out of our reach. It was good for our team to face a tough pitcher like Burklund and still be able to put the ball in play.”

Norway was held to seven hits but also drew seven walks in the second game. Addyson Burklund led the offense with two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.

Tessa Castelaz, Moraska, and Ross scored two runs each. Kendall Burklund, Myah Gilroy and Jordyn Moln all ripped doubles.

Elesia Sweig collected two RBIs for the Badgers and Guardiola doubled.

“We made some changes in the field and we were able to hold Norway to less runs,” Payette said.

Moln, Aubree LaPine, and Moraska pitched for Norway. Jaelyn Kleikamp and Guardiola shared mound duties for the Badgers.
