KINGSFORD – A tough start to the week has the Kingsford varsity softball team looking to snap a four-game skid when Menominee visits Lodal Park this afternoon for a doubleheader.
The Flivvers (7-14) dropped two at Gladstone Monday by scores of 8-6 and 10-1 and suffered 4-1 and 7-3 losses at Escanaba Tuesday.
In the Monday contests, Kingsford rallied for three runs in the fifth inning of the first game to tie the Braves 6-6, but the home team pushed two across in the sixth to regain the advantage on hold on. The second game was tied 1-1 through three innings before the Braves erupted for a six-run fourth inning.
Kingsford produced 11 hits in the opener against Gladstone. Senior Karly Trevillian was 2-for-4 with a double. Junior Mya Brunswick went 2-for-4, senior Adelyn Normand went 2-for-3 with a two-bagger and an RBI, and freshman Gracie Chartier added two more hits. In game two, the Flivvers were held to just four hits.
Brunswick took the loss allowing 11 hits with three strikeouts and one walk in the first game, while Chartier suffered the loss in game two, giving up six hits and walking one. Brunswick also saw action in game two, allowing four hits and just one more run while fanning five. A total of 10 errors between the two games certainly didn’t help either pitcher.
Addy Sanville cracked a homer for the Braves in the second game. She also went deep against the Flivvers last week.
Against the Eskymos on Tuesday, the Flivvers didn’t get on the scoreboard until the sixth inning of the first game thanks to a RBI single by sophomore Jolie Fleming – but it was one of just two hits for Kingsford. Brunswick went the whole way in the circle and only allowed four hits while whiffing eight and walking none – but another three errors were committed behind her.
Kingsford played error-free in the second game, but Escanaba jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings behind a couple of two-run homers. For the Flivvers, senior Jazzlyne Shaughnessy had two hits, and freshman Miley Bray also added two hits to pace the Flivvers’ eight-hit effort – with Bray connecting for a two-run double in the Flivvers three-run sixth.
Seniors Chloe Dubord and Landry Bray hit the homers for Escanaba. For Bray it was her second of the day after also going deep in the opener.
Chartier took the loss working three innings with eight hits, including the homers. Junior Lychele DeGroot pitched the final three frames limiting the Eskymos to just three more hits and no runs.
