Flivvers softball to host Houghton in tourney
MARQUETTE – Kingsford varsity softball concluded its regular season with 10-6 and 5-1 losses against Marquette Thursday afternoon.
The Flivvers (10-22) will host the Division 2 District 33 tournament Friday, opening against Houghton at 10 a.m. Escanaba and Negaunee follow with the winners meeting for the title after that.
Against the Sentinels, Kingsford was unable to hold on to a 3-1 lead in the first game as Marquette rallied for six runs in the fourth and another three in the sixth. Sophomore Jolie Fleming was 4-for-4 with a double, and senior Jazzlyne Shaughnessy went 3-for-4 with a double.
Juniors Mya Brunswick, Kailey Matuszewski and freshman Miley Bray also had multiple hits, Matuszewski adding a double.
Kingsford was checked to just three hits in the second contest, which included freshman Alayna Pietrantonio notching her first varsity hit. Sophomore Kyra Clement drove in Kingsford’s lone run, and Fleming had Kingsford’s other hit.
Brunswick took the game one loss in the circle, charged with five earned runs while adding six strikeouts to bring her season total up to 159 against just 13 walks. Freshman Gracie Chartier suffered the loss in the second game, allowing seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
A 10-strikeout performance by Brunswick helped Kingsford to a 5-1 victory at Norway on Wednesday afternoon, the teams playing just a single contest. Brunswick went six innings allowing just three hits, one run and one walk. She was backed by a nine-hit effort from the Flivvers’ offense, which jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Shaughnessy had three hits, driving in one. Matuszewski added two more hits with a double, and sophomore Fleming knocked two hits.
