Florence captures share of conference softball title

Florence defeated Laona-Wabeno 9-4 Tuesday to gain a share of the Northern Lakes Conference softball championship.
Coach Dan Robinson’s LadyCats finished the conference season 8-2 to tie with Three Lakes-Phelps for the crown.
Playing on the road in the conference finale, Florence fell behind 4-1, but rallied to tie it on a three-run homer by Quinn Cassidy. Sami Demuri, who pitched a complete game, helped her own cause with a two-run homer.
Miley VanDenHeuevel homered for the LadyCats’ first score.
“When they got down, they didn’t hang their heads,” Robinson said. “They willed their way through that one.”
Demuri, Cassidy, Taylor Pauley and Ashley Peterson cracked three hits apiece to lead the offense.
Contributing two hits apiece were VanDenHeuvel and Brooke Blankenhorn.
Callie Reed and Alaina Tibbs doubled and Leah Baker added a single.
DeMuri scattered seven hits in earning the win.
Florence will enter the WIAA Division 5 tournament Tuesday, hosting Elcho.
