KHS softball to face Menominee on Monday

KINGSFORD – Falling twice at Negaunee on Wednesday (2-0 and 18-7), the Kingsford varsity softball team looks to snap a five-game skid at Menominee Monday.

Junior Mya Brunswick was the short end of a pitcher’s duel in the opener against the Miners. She kept the Miners scoreless and hitless through five innings before the Miners broke through with five straight two-out singles in the sixth to tally the game’s only runs. Kingsford was limited to just three hits, one of those being a double off the bat of senior Jazzlyne Shaughnessy.

The Flivvers (8-19) led 2-0 in the second game after two and half innings before the Miners plated five in the bottom of the third and exploded for 13 runs in the fourth. Senior Karly Trevillian collected three RBIs with a 2-for-3 effort, junior Kailey Matuszewski poked a two-run triple, and sophomore Jolie Fleming went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Coach John Bray’s junior varsity team improved to 13-4 this week with a pair of wins at Calumet on Thursday, pounding the Copper Kings 18-3 and 20-4. Freshman Gracie Chartier earned the game one victory in the circle with five innings of work, allowing eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Oliva Scott clubbed five hits. Sophomore Alyssa Bacon had a three-hit game, while freshmen Lia Murphy and Alayna Pietrantonio smacked triples. Freshman Jenna Robb won game two, a three-inning contest. She yielded four hits with four walks while striking out one. Scott tripled and singled, Chartier and Pietrantonio each had a double and single, and freshman Haidyn Robinson added two more hits.

Starting at $3.50/week.
