KINGSFORD – WestPAC Pitcher of the Year Alyse Robar proved nearly untouchable Friday afternoon in the MHSAA Division 2 District 33 softball tournament.

The Negaunee sophomore pitched two complete game shutouts, including a one-hit masterpiece against Kingsford in the final as the Miners dropped Kingsford 3-0 to claim the district crown.

The Flivvers rolled 15-5 against Houghton earlier in the day in a semifinal but couldn’t break though against the Negaunee righthander until the final inning when senior Karly Trevillian connected for a one-out single.

The district final unfolded as a true pitcher’s duel, with Kingsford junior Mya Brunswick and Robar locked in a 1-0 battle through six innings. The Miners grabbed the lead in the first but it wasn’t until the top of the seventh that they final got to Brunswick again, plating two runs with three consecutive two-out hits.

“I felt we battled right to the end,” Flivvers head coach Amy Brunswick said. “Kudos to Negaunee. They’re a great team. We knew the game was going to be a battle and that it was going to most likely come down to which team could hit the ball.”

Kingsford junior Mya Brunswick fires against Negaunee in Friday’s MHSAA district final. Brunswick fanned five in the loss, giving her 175 strikeouts for the season.

Robar mowed down 10 Escanaba batters and allowed just three hits in a 2-0 semifinal win and kept it going by firing five straight strikeouts to open the game against Kingsford, sitting down eight of the first nine Flivvers she faced while taking a perfect game into the fifth before issuing her only walk of the game.

Robar finished with 11 strikeouts against the Flivvers, getting her 11th after Trevillian’s lone hit in the seventh, with a pop out ending the game after that.

A hit batsman and a single to open the game set the table for the Miners in the first inning. After the runners advanced on a double steal, Cassie Feys drove in the game’s first run with a groundout to third. The Miners managed nine hits in the game but were unable to inflict any more damage against Brunswick until the final inning.

Brunswick fanned five and only allowed one walk. She gave up a lead-off single in the seventh, but that runner was picked off for the first out. A strikeout followed for the second out but then Delaney Gladwell doubled to left and scored on a single to center by Olivia Richards. Richards then stole second and came in to score on a single to center by Megan Marker.

Brunswick struck out 11 in the semifinal win over Houghton. She allowed 7 hits and three earned runs with no walks, as the Flivvers used a six-run third inning to break open the game 7-0.

Kingsford pounded 20 hits in the semifinal and swiped 13 bases. Trevillian had three hits, including the game’s biggest blast by launching a solo homer over the fence to the power alley in left in the fifth inning. Brunswick also collected three hits, including a double with three RBIs. Senior Jazzlyne Shaughnessy smacked two doubles and a triple with an RBI.

Sophomore Jolie Fleming was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, and senior Adelyn Normand also had two hits with a double and two RBIs. Freshman Miley Bray (two hits), senior Grace Rice (two hits), and junior Kailey Matuszewski all drove in runs as well.

“I felt we came ready to play,” Brunswick said. “We knew that we would have to play an error-free game and be strong at the plate to beat Houghton, and I feel we did just that. In addition, we were aggressive with our base running. Mya did a solid job pitching and she had some great plate appearances along with Jazz, Jolie, Karly and others.”

The Flivvers finished their season 11-23.

“Overall I am proud of the girls,” Brunswick said. “Our overall record is no reflection of our ability and the hard work they put in all season. I am excited for next year. We are losing our four seniors and I wish them nothing but the best moving forward. Fortunately, we have a lot of young players returning that show a lot of potential and will help fill in the gaps.”
