Negaunee sweeps Mid-Pen track meet

GWINN — Negaunee rolled up big victories at the Mid-Peninsula Conference track and field meet held in Gwinn on Monday.

While the Miners boys scored 215 1/2 points to win by well over a hundred points, the Negaunee girls did even better, piling up 317 points as no other competitor even reached 100.

The Miners girls won their 16th consecutive championship, according to NHS girls head coach Vickie Paupore.

“Special congratulations to Sadie Rogers, Riley Conklin, Brynn Wieciech and Keira Waterman for breaking the Negaunee girls 1,600-meter relay record by over six seconds with a time of 4 minutes, 2.64 seconds,” Paupore said.

Manistique was runner-up in the girls meet with 85 points, which was more than double of third-place Ishpeming’s 42. Westwood was fourth with 34, while Gwinn had 17 and Iron Mountain 11.

In the boys meet, Negaunee’s 215 1/2 points was way out in front of runner-up Westwood’s 95, while Manistique was third with 72 1/2, followed by Ishpeming with 46, Iron Mountain 33 and Gwinn 29.

The Miners won 11 events, including three of the four relays.

Iron Mountain’s Quinton Doty placed third in both the 100 and 200 and was second in the high jump. Ethan Davis of Iron Mountain was second in the 400.

In the girls meet, the Mountaineers’ Whitney Siren was fifth at 1600 meters.
