Niagara softball takes two from Lena-STAA

Niagara came away with two wins in a high-scoring softball doubleheader Thursday at Lena-St. Thomas Aquinas Academy.

The Badgers won the opener 11-6 and rallied for a 22-15 win in the second game after Lena-STAA put up 12 runs in the first inning.

“We showed patience at the plate and the team never gave up,” said Niagara coach Emily Payette.

Zowie Loukus cracked a double and single and drove in two runs for the Badgers in the opener. Paige Guardiola laced a triple with three RBIs. Shelby Zittlow doubled and Elesia Sweig, India Varda and Jaelyn Kleikamp added singles.

Sweig pitched five innings for the win, allowing four runs, three hits, walking four and fanning four. The save went to Guardiola. In two innings, she gave up an earned run on two hits while walking one and striking out two.

The Badgers trailed 15-7 in the second game before coming through with 12 runs in the top of the sixth.

Niagara totaled 14 hits, led by Guardiola’s four singles. Alivia Kleikamp contributed three singles and 5 RBIs and Sienna Larock slashed a triple and single, driving in four runs.

The Badgers also got two singles from Jaelyn Kleikamp and a single apiece from Grace Payette, Carly Sanicki and Sweig.

Niagara drew 15 walks, including four by Payette, who scored five runs. Zittlow walked three times and scored four runs.

Sweig again got the win, pitching all seven innings.
