Norway captures district softball crown

Norway held off Bark River-Harris for a 5-4 win in an MHSAA district softball championship game Friday at Marion Park.

The Knights will face Hancock in a regional semifinal Saturday at Lake Linden-Hubbell. L’Anse and Superior Central will meet in an earlier semifinal Saturday, with the title game to follow.

Norway’s Kendall Burklund pitched a complete seven-inning game against Bark River-Harris allowing three hits and two earned runs. She walked two, hit two batters and struck out 10.

The Knights led 5-1 after three innings, gave up a single run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth.

At the plate, Kara Stanchina rapped a double and single and Lilly Tomlanovich laced two singles. Myah Gilroy singled and drew two walks and Devynn Ross singled.

The Knights advanced to the title game with a 16-0 win over Carney-Nadeau in three innings. Burklund pitched two innings and Lila Moraska worked the third, with neither allowing a hit. Burklund fanned four and Moraska struck out the side.

Stanchina and Burklund each had a double and single while Jordyn Moln contributed two singles. Tomlanovich and Addyson Burklund tripled and Payton Paquette singled.

Bark River-Harris reached the district finals with an 18-3 win over Stephenson in four innings.

Hancock advanced to the regionals with a 4-3 win over Lake Linden-Hubbell.
