Norway scored five runs in the second inning and held on to defeat Escanaba 5-3 to wrap up baseball’s regular season Tuesday.
“Today was a nice bounce-back effort from last week,” said Knights coach Tony Adams. “It’s now time to take the lessons learned from the regular season and apply them to the postseason.”
Norway (18-7) will host North Central at 1 p.m. Friday in an MHSAA Division 4 district opener at Marion Park. The winner will play either Stephenson or Bark River-Harris for the District 99 title at 4 p.m. Friday.
North Dickinson, meanwhile, will compete in District 98, traveling Friday to Wakefield-Marenisco to face Ewen-Trout Creek. A win would send the Nordics into the district title game against either Ironwood or Wakefield-Marenisco at 5 p.m. Friday.
Norway used four pitchers in Tuesday’s home win over Escanaba, getting three shutout innings from Hunter Langin, two from Landon DeBakker and one from Cameron Varda. The Eskymos scored all of their runs in the third against Owen Baij as Ashton Rymkos keyed the surge with a two-run single.
Kellan Amundson had a two-run double for the Knights and Tobi Anderson contributed two singles. Varda doubled and Tristan Lessor added an RBI single.
Northland Pines 10,
Kingsford 9
Northland Pines rallied to snap Kingsford’s five-game win streak in what was the final regular contest of the season for the visiting Flivvers. Next up for Kingsford (14-11) is the MHSAA Division 2 district tournament Friday at Lodal Park.
The Flivvers host Houghton at 10 a.m. with Escanaba and Negaunee to follow. Winners of the early games will meet for the district title later in the afternoon.
In Tuesday’s game, the Eagles overcame a 6-2 deficit by putting up four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. A Kingsford rally in the top of the seventh came up a run short.
Nolan Huelskamp homered for Northland Pines.
In Division 3, Iron Mountain will face Menominee on Friday at Gladstone, with the winner advancing to play either Gladstone or Newberry.
Crandon 5,
Florence 3
A three-run triple by Beau Bartz in the fourth inning was all the offense Florence could muster Tuesday as the Bobcats ended the regular season by settling for a share of the Northern Lakes Conference championship.
“Tough one tonight,” said Florence coach Kris Johnson. “Proud of our team to have a share of the conference title at 8-2 in the Northern Lakes along with Crandon and Laona-Wabeno.”
Both of Florence’s conference losses came against Crandon. The Bobcats swept Laona-Wabeno while the Rebels swept Crandon.
The Cardinals’ Trent Palubicki got the win Tuesday, working six innings. Reece Mayer earned the save, pitching a 1-2-3 seventh.
Florence’s Mason Koski gave up four earned runs over 5 2/3 innings for the host Bobcats. Bradly Steber held Crandon scoreless for 1 2/3 innings.
Bartz and Logan McCoy each collected two hits for Florence and Steber added a single.
Florence will host White Lake today in a WIAA Division 4 regional opener. Niagara, meanwhile, opens at home today against Pembine-Goodman.
