Northern Michigan goes 1-1 in basketball Border Bash

IRONWOOD — The Northern Michigan Girls’ All-Stars were tested, but they prevailed in a 121-108 basketball triumph over the Northern Wisconsin All-Stars in the Kiwanis Club of Ironwood Border Bash.

Lauren Adams of Norway and Cassie Olson of Kingsford played for Michigan, coached by by Negaunee’s Mike O’Donnell in the June 4 contest.

Wisconsin shaved its deficit to 60-44 on a pair of free throws by Ella Van Order of Stevens Point Pacelli 9.4 seconds before halftime at Gogebic Community College’s Dennis Mackey gymnasium.

A 20-foot jumper by Ewen-Trout Creek’s Emma Besonen gave Michigan a 112-101 lead with less than four minutes left in the game. Wisconsin got within 117-107 on a pair of free throws by Van Order with 1:34 remaining. Northern Michigan, however, didn’t allow the visitors to get any closer.

Ishpeming’s Janessa Eagle, who will be playing at Michigan Tech and helped the Hematites capture a pair of Division 4 state titles during her prep career, scored 27 points and was named Most Valuable Player.

“It was fun,” she said. “This was a good test of endurance. This tells us what kind of shape we’re in.”

Kara Roberts of Baraga, a Wisconsin-Eau Claire recruit, added 23 points and Adams tossed in 19. Olson netted two points.

Urijah Reeves of Menominee Nation was Northern Wisconsin’s leader with 22 points. Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Melaina Granquest and Jordyn Jaglinski of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption hit 18 each. Van Order scored 16.

The Northern Wisconsin Boys’ All-Stars turned what was a close contest into a rout as they rolled past Northern Michigan in the Kiwanis Club of Ironwood Border Bash.

Northern Michigan trailed just 71-67 late in the third stanza following a layup by Ishpeming Westwood’s Ethan Marta and was down by seven points going into the fourth.

The home team, however, was outscored 49-14 in the final 13 minutes.

“All these kids have been playing for years and we tried to make it fun for them,” Northern Michigan (Westwood) coach Luke Gray said. “We didn’t make enough shots and they made a ton in the fourth quarter. Every one of their players scored in double digits.”

Prentice’s Evan Lord, who plans to continue his basketball career at Madison Tech, was selected Most Valuable Player. He finished with 16 points as did Rhinelander’s Devon Feck and Tony, Wis. Flambeau’s Dominic Kopacz.

Northern Michigan was led by Marta’s 32 points. Menominee’s Tanner Theuerkaufscored 13 and Marquette’s Connor Fierstine, who won the slam dunk contest at halftime, finished with 10.

Michigan’s roster included Anthony Pineda of Norway, who scored three points.
