Norway wins regional softball championship
Norway won the MHSAA Division 4 Region 25 softball title today, defeating Superior Central 11-0 in the championship game at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
The Knights defeated Hancock 4-3 in the semifinal, while Superior Central had advanced with a 13-9 win over L’Anse.
Norway will play Hillman in a state quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday in Cedarville. Hillman won the Region 26 title with a 7-1 victory over Onaway.
In MHSAA Division 4 baseball, Norway won the Region 26 championship with an 8-1 win today over Hillman at Rudyard.
The Knights, however, were denied a third straight trip to the state tournament in East Lansing, bowing 15-8 to Painesdale Jeffers in the state quarterfinal game that followed.
In Division 3 baseball today at Gladstone, Hancock defeated Manistee 3-0 to win the Region 17 title, but lost to Traverse City St. Francis 15-2 in five innings in the quarterfinal.
In Division 2 baseball, Escanaba lost 1-0 to Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills in the Region 9 final. Kenowa Hills then advanced to the state tournament with an 8-2 quarterfinal win over Standish Sterling.
In Division 3 softball, Gladstone won a Region 17 semifinal 9-3 over Traverse City St. Francis, but was edged by Boyne City 5-4 in the title game.
Negaunee was eliminated by Ogemaw Heights 12-2 in five innings in a Division 2 Region 9 semifinal in Sault Ste. Marie. Ogemaw Heights won the regional championship 2-1 over Gaylord.
