UP junior golfers to challenge TimberStone

MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula Junior Golf Tour has already started its summer season with the third stop coming up this week in Iron Mountain and the fourth a few days later at a Marquette course.

Sponsored by the U.P. Golf Association and its member courses, the U.P. juniors have already had dates at Wawonowin Country Club in Champion on June 8 and at Riverside Country Club in Menominee this past Thursday.

They’re in the thick of their season with at least two stops every week for the next four weeks, with the season wrapping up in early August.

This week includes a Tuesday event at TimberStone Golf Club in Iron Mountain starting at 8 a.m. Central time.

Open to youth golfers ages 8 to 18, entry fee is $20 per event, which includes greens fees, food and pop, trophies and medallions for each gender and age group, and unlimited range balls and tees.

Golfers ages 8 to 11 play nine holes at each event, while 12 and over get in 18 holes. There are five age divisions, two-year increments in each except for the three years in the oldest group, 16-18.

It might be too late to sign up for TimberStone, as UPJGT rules state that sign-up must be done 48 hours prior to an event, but it’s not too late for this week’s other stop.

That will be at the Marquette Golf Club, specifically the Heritage Course, in Marquette at 8 a.m. Eastern time Thursday.

For that event, visit the UPGA website at upga.org and look under the Junior Golf Tour link, or call directly to golf professional Bob Bastian at 906-225-0721, ext. 1.

The UPGA website has separate web links for each event to the First Tee Northern Michigan website, where registration can also be completed. The site also notes that registration for multiple stops can be handled in one transaction.

For more information on the tour and specifically about online registration, email Kenn Hruska at KHruska@TheFirstTeeNorthernMichigan.Org.

The 10-event season will be half over by this time next week, the first stop after the Fourth of July being at Portage Lake Golf Course just outside Houghton at 8 a.m. Monday.

For that one, call golf pro Tyler Bergwall — a Marquette Senior High School graduate — at 906-487-2641, or again, visit the UPGA website for a link to registration.

After the second-to-last stop at the Northern Michigan University Golf Course on Aug. 3, the final stop is the annual UPGA Junior Tour Championship to be held at Terrace Bluff Golf Club in Gladstone on Aug. 10.

While sign-up for the finale will be handled the same as at other stops, this event also include several other requirements — golfers must be a UPGA Junior Tour member and have played in at least two previous events this summer.

But the windfall of a good finish in the finale is that the top five boys and top two girls also qualify for the Golf Association of Michigan Junior Invitational to be held at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers Golf Course West Course in East Lansing on Oct. 10-11.
