Gladstone takes Minors tournament title

Gladstone will represent District 10 in the Michigan Little League Minors (ages 8-10) state baseball tournament in Harbor Springs after going undefeated in the district tournament.

Norway reached the finals, but fell to Gladstone 12-2 in the title game played Tuesday at Gladstone Sports Park.

Iron Mountain placed third in the seven-team tournament after being sent into the loser’s bracket with a 9-6 loss to Gladstone.

Kingsford defeated Norway 5-4 in the opening round of the tourney, but then fell 13-9 to Gladstone. Norway bumped out Kingsford with a 5-2 win in the loser’s bracket, and followed that with a win over Iron Mountain to earn the right to face Gladstone.

The 16-team state tournament gets underway Friday, July 24.

In the Michigan Little League Majors (ages 11-12) state softball tournament in St. Clair, Escanaba reached the semifinals but fell to Georgetown 9-8.

St. Clair went on to win the state title with a 1-0 win over Georgetown.

Escanaba went 2-1 in pool play with its only loss coming against St. Clair, 4-1. Escanaba posted an 11-0 win over Grosse Pointe in the quarterfinals.

In the Juniors (ages 13-14) Michigan Little League softball state tournament hosted by Georgetown, Gladstone was eliminated after going 1-2 in pool play. Gladstone’s team was combined with Iron Mountain North Area League.

Marquette, meanwhile, went 2-1 in pool play to reach a four-team championship segment. The games were postponed Thursday by poor air quality and rescheduled for Monday.
