Kingsford Majors earn state tournament trip

Kingsford will advance to the Michigan Little League Majors (ages 10-12) state tournament in Tecumseh after capturing the District 10 crown at Marion Park in Norway.

The state tournament starts July 24.

Kingsford was undefeated in the district tournament, but needed a late rally Thursday to eliminate Iron Mountain 10-9. A win by Iron Mountain would have forced a winner-take-all title game.

Kingsford was down 9-5 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth with the bases empty, then clawed back with a series of hits and walks. A hit from Luca Cory drove in the tying runs.

Later in the inning, Harvey Ellis scooted home after a passed ball to claim the victory.

Kingsford led 5-2 after two innings, but Iron Mountain plated four runs in the third and three more in the fifth.

Iron Mountain collected seven hits in the game, including two by Hunter Leonoff to drive in six runs.

Weston Baij took the mound first for Iron Mountain, pitching four innings, allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs while striking out six. Mack Anderson, Leonoff and Carson Mattson came on in relief.

Kingsford collected seven hits — two by Harvey Ellis.

Kingsford’s Jade Unrein pitched four innings, allowing four hits, three walks and four earned runs, He fanned seven.

Kade Neuens in relief allowed three hits and no earned runs.

On its way to the championship, Kingsford had a comeback win over Escanaba 4-2. Kingsford then defeated Iron Mountain 9-0 and Gladstone 5-3.

Iron Mountain advanced through the loser’s bracket with a win over Gladstone.

In other Little League action, Escanaba claimed the Minors District 10 (ages 8-10) softball championship with a 4-1 win Thursday over Gladstone at Lodal Park in Kingsford.
