Brayden Kassin threw three touchdown passes and Iron Mountain’s defense picked off Hancock four times as the Mountaineers opened their varsity football season with a 35-0 win at home Thursday.

“Our team took a step in the right direction especially on the defensive side,” said Iron Mountain coach Kyle Johnson. “You always want to win the turnover battle.”

Connor Pickett, Quinton Doty, Kevin Sgrecci, and Jared Reath collected the interceptions as Iron Mountain allowed just 5 yards passing and 109 on the ground.

“Offensively we had a great game as well,” Johnson said.

Kassin was 13 of 16 passing for 198 yards. He had two rushing touchdowns to go with a pair scoring tosses to Quinton Doty and another to Charles Anderson.

The Mountaineers racked up 385 yards of offense -- 213 passing and 172 rushing. Doty caught four passes for 138 yards, while Gavin Winters, Doty and Kassin paced the ground game.

Marcus Lindgren led the defense with five solo tackles. Pickett and Maddox Menza had three solo tackles each.

“We are looking ahead to next week for a great challenge in Petoskey against North Muskegon,” Johnson said.

North Muskegon was an MHSAA district finalist in Division 7 in 2025, while the Mountaineers were a district finalist in Division 8. Friday’s game at Petoskey is slated for a 4 p.m. Eastern time kickoff.
