Norway senior quarterback Kaleb LaPine rushed for 264 yards and five touchdowns as the Knights opened their varsity football season with a 50-2 win at Munising on Thursday.
LaPine's efforts included an 87-yard TD jaunt. He also completed 5 of 8 passes for 148 yards -- 98 of which came on a scoring pass to senior Trent Martin.
"”I’m proud of the way our young football team came out and played hard," said Norway coach Andy Mendina. "We made some mistakes early on, but the kids bounced back from those mistakes and we were able to put some points on the board early. We have a lot of work to do, but that’s what we expect early in the season," he added.
The Knights led 26-2 at halftime.
Landon Ross led the defense with 14 tackles, including three for loss. He scored on an interception return as well.
Norway's Kellan Amundson had five tackes and a sack.
Martin totaled three catches for 116 yards. Noah Pearson had one catch for 33 yards.
Norway, now 1-0 in the Great Lakes Eight Conference-West, will host Gogebic in a conference game Thursday. The Miners fell to North Central 36-0 on Friday.
