Florence got through some hiccups in the second set, defeating Niagara 25-11, 25-23, 25-8 in “the battle of County Highway N” on Tuesday in Florence.
"Once again we showed a little bit of lapse mentally in the second set and just sloppy play, but I was very proud that we were down at one time 21-15 and we came back and won that set 25-23,” said Florence coach Teresa Chrisman. “That shows some grit and determination. And hats off to Niagara I thought they were very scrappy defensively. Once we got passes and sets where we needed them we were able to show some of our hitting. But, Niagara played well defensively.”
Badgers coach Maryellen Allred was also impressed by her squad’s defense.
“We learned we are capable of controlling a game against a highly competitive team,” she said. “We still need to master consistently controlling and finishing.”
Kelsi Chrisman led Florence with eight kills, Miley VanDenHeuvel added five kills, Naomi Millan four kills and Emily Wolske, three.
Julia Murrow led the serving with four aces as the LadyCats only missed two serves. Taylor Pauley, Millan, Chrisman, VanDenHeuvel and Murrow all had 100% serving.
The 6-2 setter duo of Murrow and Chrisman had 10 and 8 assists, respectively. Pauley led the back row with 13 digs.
Niagara’s Bristol Sanicki recorded five kills, two blocks, and three aces. Peyton Allred added nine digs and three kills.
Lily Stenbrecher led Niagara in assists with 13 and contributed nine digs.
Florence travels to Laona tonight for the first part of the Northern Lakes Conference tournament for a match with Goodman-Pembine, Elcho and Laona/Wabeno. They’ll finish the tournament in Crandon on Saturday, facing Crandon, Phelps and Three Lakes.
Niagara heads to the M & O Invite on Monday at Crivitz.
Florence junior varsity also swept Niagara with scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-15. Louise Millan had 100% serving.
