Forest Park hosted Houghton and North Dickinson in girls volleyball matches Tuesday, coming away with a pair of wins.
The Trojans defeated Houghton 3-1 (25-11, 24-26, 25-20, 25-17).
“We started off really strong in the first set, covering the floor well and playing aggressively,” said Forest Park coach Bobbie Anderson.
In the second set, unforced errors helped the Gremlins run their offense more effectively.
“The third and fourth sets were much better,” Anderson said. “The girls settled back in, stuck to our game plan, and battled all the way to the end. I'm really proud of them for fighting through four sets and staying mentally strong, especially after letting the second set slip away.”
The Trojans defeated North Dickinson 25-15, 25-10, 25-15.
“We came out swinging and continued that intensity throughout all three sets,” Anderson said. “I thought ND did a nice job keeping the ball alive, but our offense definitely made it difficult for them to get into a rhythm.”
Josie Anderson paced the Forest Park offense with 29 kills on the night, while Harper Anderson led with eight aces and Lily Curnow with 50 digs.
North Dickinson, which fell to Houghton (25-11, 25-18, 25-23), gained valuable experience, coach Taylor Johnson said.
“Anytime you get to play the top teams around you win or you learn, and it was nice to see the girls adjust in real time to the challenges that both teams were throwing at us,” Johnson said. “While we typically rely on the leadership of our seniors, our freshmen, Carli Jungwirth and Kathryn Steinbrecher, brought really good energy tonight that kept our momentum going.”
Johnson credited the hitting of Forest Park’s Tessa Bartoszek and Josie Anderson.
“They both challenged our defense tremendously,” she said. “Hats off to coach Anderson, her squad looks as formidable as ever.”
North Dickinson stats:
Carli Jungwirth – 4 kills, 1 assist, 3 aces, 34 digs
Aunika Lindholm – 3 kills, 19 assists, 2 aces, 23 digs
Alle Brown – 1 dig
Aspen Anderson – 2 kills, 2 assists, 24 digs
Kathryn Steinbrecher – 5 kills, 1 block, 4 digs
Ella Rossi – 8 kills, 1 assist, 1 ace, 5 blocks, 2 digs
Khloe Roberts – 5 kills, 1 assist, 1 ace, 16 digs

Kingsford 3
Menominee 0
Following a 3-1 volleyball loss to Calumet on Thursday -- its first loss of the season -- Kingsford made some changes on offense Tuesday and swept Menominee 3-0.
The scores were 25-11, 25-12, 25-16.
“Proud of the girls for getting back on our home court and making some intentional improvements,” said Flivver coach Jaclynn Kreider. “We talked about the importance of learning from our weaknesses that were exposed last week.”
Kreider said she was pleased with the team’s progress.
“We switched up the offense a bit to get another attacker option and that seemed to be effective. This year is a year in which we are going to have to be ready to switch up our offensive strategies on a regular basis to find what works best against different opponents.”
