Kingsford downs Houghton, IM to extend win streak to four

KINGSFORD -- The Kingsford boys soccer team extended its winning streak to four games this week by topping both Houghton and Iron Mountain.
The Flivvers improved to 8-2-1 on the season.
Kingsford downed Houghton 4-2 Monday despite the Gremlins jumping to an early lead with goals in the second and eighth minutes, Flivvers coach Zach Celello reported.
Halfway through the first half, Tomas Uribe played a through ball to Gavin Kinsella, who scored to make it 1-2 heading into halftime.
Two minutes into the second half, senior defender Colin Micheau played a free kick into Uribe, who tied the game at 2-2. Fifteen minutes into the half, Jett Buckley was fouled in the box and converted the penalty kick to make it 3-2.
With 5 minutes to go in the game, senior Evan Grymes won the ball and played it to Gavin Kinsella, who shot from outside the box on his left foot and curled it into the top corner to make it 4-2.
"Gavin's goal was probably the best shot I've ever seen in person," Celello said.
He added, "It was not a great first half, so we had a good talk with the guys at halftime and challenged them to reach the level of play they're capable of. They came out firing on all cylinders and played the best half they've played all year."
Kingsford started much stronger Tuesday against Iron Mountain, notching three goals in the first eight minutes.
In the third minute, Jett Buckley scored on a rebound off Gavin Kinsella's shot to make it 1-0. In the sixth minute, Kinsella played the ball to Buckley to make it 2-0. In the eighth minute, Kinsella's shot was saved, but he made the goal on the rebound to put the Flivvers up 3-0.
In the 14th minute, sophomore Kaleb Werner passed to senior Cadence Good, who netted the goal to make it 4-0. Three minutes later, freshman defender Griffin Johnson scored off sophomore Harold Boersma's corner kick to reach 5-0.
With 12 minutes to go in the half, the Mountaineers got their first goal on a free kick to make it 5-1.
Then Kingsford sophomore Kieran Hempel played a corner kick to sophomore Kyle Kass to have the teams head into halftime at 6-1.
Iron Mountain converted a penalty kick halfway through the second half to make the final score 6-2.
"We had a number of solid performances from a wide variety of players," Celello said. "It was a beautiful night for a game, and our players took the opportunity to have fun on our home field."
The Flivvers will next play at Marquette (5-4-2) on Tuesday.
