Knights, Nordics, Flivvers post volleyball victories

Norway defeated visiting Iron Mountain 3-0 in volleyball action Tuesday, having made some position switches since their last game.

“The girls just were having some struggles, and they shined tonight with the change” said Knights coach Meghan Rossato.

The scores were 25-23, 25-13, 25-17.

Norway’s Kendall Burklund dominated across the court with a .429 hitting percentage, 14 digs, and five aces. Addy Burklund added three aces, 12 kills, and five digs.

“Super proud of the girls, they came out with energy, they made smart plays, and really had fun together on the court and it shows,” Rossato said.

“Emilee (Temrowski) had some great digs that allowed Aili (Freiberg) to set up her team, chalking in 25 assists. Tessa (Castelaz) again was a rock star at the serving line with six aces.”

North Dickinson 3,

Rapid River 1

Hosting Rapid River, North Dickinson prevailed with a 25-13, 25-20, 24-26, 26-24 performance.

“We came out confident and played well through the first two sets, but became a little too comfortable heading into the third,” said Nordics coach Taylor Johnson. “Rapid River found a strong surge of momentum and energy, catching us on our heels and playing flat.”

Trailing 19-11 in the fourth set, the Nordics responded with outstanding serving from junior Khloe Roberts. Her run forced Rapid River into two timeouts and helped ND fight back to tie the set at 22-22.

Carli Jungwirth then stepped to the service line with ND trailing 22-24 and helped close out the win.

“Offensively, we had a strong night as a team, led by eight kills from Ella Rossi,” Johnson said. “We also showed some great resilience when things weren't going our way. Moving forward, we'll need to bring a little more energy and urgency and stay playing strong,” she said.

Playing its Great Northern Conference opener on the road, Kingsford came through with a 25-19, 25-17, 25-15 victory.

“Escanaba brings a big, spirited student section so tonight was a ton of fun,” said Flivvers coach Jaclynn Kreider. “We love playing in an environment that is excited about volleyball and supports athletes.”

Kingsford’s hitting efficiency was improved from a recent tournament in Appleton, Wis., Kreider noted.

“We had a ton of girls contribute tonight which I was happy with,” she added. “We will continue to work hard to get better so I am excited to see this team grow together this season.”
