LadyCats go 5-0 at Wisconsin tournament

Florence, the smallest school in attendance, swept through the Valders Invitational on Saturday, posting five volleyball wins without dropping a set.
“The play all around was steady and consistent,” said Florence coach Teresa Chrisman. “Something we have been preaching and trying to improve on.”
The LadyCats defeated Waupaca 25-19, 25-22; Little Chute 25-8, 25-23; Omro 25-8, 25-15; host Valders 25-9, 25-15; and Reedsville 25-15, 25-19.
Miley VanDenHeuvel led the way for Florence with 35 kills and 33 digs. Kelsi Chrisman was right behind with 34 kills and 32 digs.
“Having two girls that can really put the ball away and do so consistently is game changer,” coach Chrisman said. “We have been doing a better job at getting Miley going in the middle.”
Kelsi Chrisman tallied 34 assists, which put her at over 1,000 assists in her career as a junior.
“Sophomore Julia Murrow really continues to improve and has become a great addition -- she tallied 54 assists on the day,” coach Chrisman said. “Naomi Millan and Emily Wolske had great serving throughout the day.” Millan notched eight aces and Wolske seven.
The tournament victory followed a 3-2 loss at home Thursday to Northern Lakes Conference foe Laona-Wabeno.
“The girls and I were pretty disappointed in some mental roadblocks from our play (Thursday),” coach Chrisman said. “We were up 2-0 with some pretty convincing scores in the first two sets but we just let the Rebels back in and they ended up pulling out the victory. I think this Valders tournament helped boost our confidence and I think it validates what I already knew in that our conference play, in regards to volleyball, is pretty highly competitive.”
Florence is slated to play in a 10-team tournament in Escanaba on Saturday, following conference action this week against Goodman-Pembine and Three Lakes.
